Four middle school science teachers (grades 6–8) share practical, classroom-tested strategies for supporting student access and participation in NGSS-aligned OpenSciEd classrooms. Over two years of implementation, they've developed scaffolds, routines, and structures that help students engage in discourse, modeling, investigation, and sensemaking.
Attendees will explore concrete supports—including student binders and guided note systems—that help students organize thinking, connect ideas across the storyline, and revise explanations as learning develops. Teachers will also share discussion routines for Scientist Circles, scaffolds for modeling and scientific argumentation, and classroom systems that boost engagement and confidence during investigations. Throughout the session, presenters will share authentic classroom examples, visuals, and lessons learned from real OpenSciEd classrooms across grades 6–8.
TAKEAWAYS:
Attendees will leave with practical scaffolds, routines, and classroom structures they can immediately implement to help more students successfully access OpenSciEd instruction, participate in scientific discourse, connect ideas across a storyline, and revise their thinking over time.
