This is Option 2. OpenSciEd High School Physics Unit P.1 Curriculum Launch AND Facilitator Workshop Series
This OpenSciEd Curriculum Launch Workshop series is for educators who plan to implement the High School Physics Unit P.1 Energy Flow from Earth’s Systems in their classrooms. Eight live sessions are scheduled on November 3, 10, 17, 20, 24, and December 1, 4, and 8, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM Eastern time.
This immersive professional learning experience is centered around the compelling and real-world context of the Texas power crisis of February 2021. Explore how to guide students in making sense of the complex social, environmental, and physical systems involved in meeting community energy needs.
Throughout this virtual series, you will experience key lessons from the unit as a student would—engaging with phenomena, analyzing data, and developing explanatory models that span multiple scales, from electrons moving through circuits to decisions made by power companies. You will see how the unit supports students in understanding energy transfer, evaluating the reliability of different energy sources, and applying engineering design principles to propose solutions that meet the real needs of their communities.
By participating, you will gain an understanding of how this unit supports student sensemaking, critical thinking, and civic engagement. You will also learn how to effectively navigate the embedded instructional resources to foster meaningful and relevant science learning in your classroom.
In this Option, two additional seminars are scheduled for Facilitators on Saturdays November 22 and December 13, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM Eastern time, for a total of ten live sessions.
The Facilitator Workshop Series is for educators who plan to implement the High School Physics Unit P.1 Energy Flow from Earth’s Systems in their classrooms and/or want to develop a professional learning facilitator “tool kit” to provide the Curriculum Launch workshop for high school science teachers in their school or district.
Program dates and times:
The eight live sessions are scheduled on Mondays and Thursdays, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM Eastern time. Two additional live sessions are scheduled on Saturdays, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM Eastern time. Specific program dates are below:
- November 3, 10, 17, 20, 24, and December 1, 4, and 8 (Mondays and Thursdays)
- November 22 and December 13 (Saturdays)
During the program participants have access to:
- Digital resources and all NSTA online community tools (My Library, My Profile, Community Forums)
- All archive versions of the sessions to watch on-demand.
Participants will receive a certificate from NSTA for attending the live sessions.
Note about Option 1 of the OpenSciEd High School Physics Unit P.1 Curriculum Launch Workshop Series:
You may instead register to attend only Option 1 of this program, the Curriculum Launch Workshop Series, which includes only the eight live sessions on Mondays and Thursdays from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM Eastern time.
