Join us for this web seminar series titled Social Justice in Science - From Theory to Practice, Application, and Reflection: Topic Study for K-12 Educators taking place on Saturday, October 26, 2024, and Saturday, February 8, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM ET.
In this Web Seminar Series, we will host a Professional Learning Network (PLN) dedicated to educators looking to create instructional learning plans that actively engage themes of social justice and liberatory education in STEM.
This series offers a unique opportunity for educators to join a dedicated PLN focused on the intersection of social justice and STEM education. Through these sessions, participants will gain practical instructional strategies to create meaningful and impactful STEM lessons that meet academic goals and empower students to become change-makers in their communities. Whether you're just beginning to explore these concepts or want to deepen your practice, this series will provide the support, resources, and community you need to implement social justice in your science content.
Program outline:
Web Seminar 1: In this seminar, we will dive deep into the principles of social justice and liberatory education, focusing on integrating these themes into STEM lesson plans. Participants will engage in collaborative activities to design lesson plans centered on equity, inclusivity, and critical thinking. The seminar will provide practical tools and strategies for creating STEM lessons that meet academic standards and empower students to challenge systemic inequities. By the end of this seminar, educators will leave with a well-crafted lesson plan ready for implementation.
Web Seminar 2: Building on the foundation laid in the first seminar, this follow-up will focus on analyzing student work from the implemented social justice STEM lessons. Participants will engage in reflective discussions to assess the effectiveness of their lesson plans, share insights on student learning outcomes, and explore areas for improvement. The seminar will also guide refining instructional strategies and planning the next steps to continue creating a liberatory educational environment. By the end of this seminar, educators will have a clearer understanding of how to measure the impact of their teaching and how to continue evolving their practice to support all students in their STEM learning journey.
Private Forum: In between seminars 1 and 2, participants will be encouraged to engage with others and the presenters in relevant asynchronous conversations. Participation in the private forum conversations is optional.
Program dates and times:
The two live web seminars are scheduled on Saturdays, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM Eastern time. Specific program dates are below:
