Universal Design for Learning Science:  Reframing Elementary Instruction in Physical Science is a unique classroom resource, first and foremost, because of its assumption of ability rather than disability.

Authors Deborah Hanuscin and Delinda van Garderen will dispel the myth that accessible science means “lowering the bar." Participants in this book study will learn how Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in the context of thoughtfully crafted lessons aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) can provide appropriately challenging and dynamic experiences for all students, including those with special needs. Through use of classroom vignettes and personal stories of elementary classroom teachers, participants will gain knowledge of implementing science lessons in diverse science classrooms. The authors will share how to make use of the information and resources provided in the book to easily implement UDL strategies that reduce or eliminate unnecessary barriers to learning.

Program dates:

The four live web seminars was held on February 15 and ran through to March 8, 2023.

During the book study participants had access to:

  • A moderated private forum for group discussions with other book study participants
  • Digital resources and all NSTA online community tools (My Library, My Profile, Community Forums)
  • All archive versions of the web seminars to watch on-demand.

Participants will receive a certificate from NSTA after each live web seminar for (1) attending the live program AND (2) completing the post-program survey.
