Hi Christie,
I am currently a pre-service teacher in Iowa and I recently created a similar lesson. I created a rainforest lesson in which students compare the sounds of the rainforest (animals, plants, the rain) to sounds around them (cars, trees, animals). Students would make rain sticks so they could recreate the sound of the rain and I would show videos of animals that live in the rainforest. To compare it to the desert, you could do a similar thing and see what sounds a desert makes and you could compare both the rainforest and desert by sound. Hopefully this idea helps or sparks some other ideas!
Good luck!
Allison
