Hi everyone,
Does anyone else struggle with teaching something they just don't 'love' but are required to teach?? Any advise??
*Mainly posting this because it is required for my class*
Thanks!!
You just described me teaching Earth Science. *yawn*
One thing that I have found helpful is create as many opportunities as I can for students to discover and identify topics that are interesting to them. At least I can get excited about helping them even if the subject is as boring as a box of rocks. (see what I did there?)
The first I taught the Earth Science standards of physical science, I thought I'd hate it. Then a volcano erupted in Iceland, and there were earthquakes and tsunami in the ring of fire as soon as we started. I felt like the earth was challenging my assumption it was boring. A few years later, Neil DeGrasse Tyson did the series on TV that went hand in hand with the course. It's hard not to fall in love with the world around us.
When I am a teacher of a subject, I must master that subject and apply it well.
I agree, I think viewing the discipline with a negative outlook will only cause the students to view physical science through that lens. Teachers need to provide the same energy and enthusiasm for all the science disciplines. I think more practice and investigation through resources and case studies will develop your interest and understanding of physical science. Maybe try incorporating more investigational activities that are interactive and engaging for both the students and the teacher.
