Hello, I am a pre-service teacher that would like to know of any good strategies or recommendations to get parents involved with their child's science projects or homework activities. What are some fun hands-on activities both parents and student can enjoy and learn from?
Hi Aranay. I think a good way to start would be to send an email and newsletter home about upcoming science projects and in class activities coming up. Also make sure to really excite the kids about the projects because then they will go home excited to tell their parents about it. Also, I would say many parents want to help but might have to work so maybe give students class time and ask for parent donations for ones that cannot help during school hours. I would also say to invite parents to come in to hear the science lesson that will occur before assigning the project, this will give them a better idea of what is expected and will make them more eager to help their child. I am learning too but hope this helps.
Getting parents familiar with the curriculum could be a good first step! Also, maybe starting a newsletter for your classroom with tips/activities parents and students could do together at home could be helpful!
