Hello All, I am new to NSTA. I am currently completing student teaching for EC-6. I am placed in a 1st grade classroom this semester. Does anyone have any tips about NSTA or just teaching, in general? Thanks, Breanna V.

Welcome! It looks like you've gotten some really good information already. I'd just like to add: http://www.nsta.org/publications/freebies.aspx You can find out more about Earth Day, the eclipse in August, robotics, and so much more!

Hello, I'm a pre-service teacher as well, the above suggestion will come in handy finding things to do.  I also found that on another community post on this site there was mention of http://www.getcaughtengineering.com/  once on this site click on lessons and ideas.  It gives a few ideas of classroom STEM ideas to use in classes in elementary. What I am curious about is trying to icorporate a lesson into Kindergarten.  This year I was assigned a kindergarten class and with their attention span I understand I won't be able to go too far into details before they lose interest.  Does anyone have any simple ideas to keep a lesson going while also being able to change it every 15-20 minutes to keep their attention?

Dear Mitchell (and Others): Within the NSTA Learning Center, I encourage you to do a keyword search (I used "early childhood") and got several promising results. Some of them I added links below for you: Start Young! Early Childhood Science Activities (e-book): http://learningcenter.nsta.org/resource/?id=10.2505/PKEB197X The Early Years: The Nature of Science in Early Childhood http://learningcenter.nsta.org/resource/?id=10.2505/4/sc14_052_01_24 Hope this serves as a start! Flavio.

Thanks for the tip Mitchell! Yes, so far I have also had difficulty incorporating some of the lessons into K-1st grade. It is hard to simplify the content for younger students! Best of luck! -Bre V.

Welcome to the preservice teachers who have reached out in this forum, at conferences, and on the NSTA blogs!
The Early Childhood Education profession and Science Education profession are one and the same for many of us. Regardless of the age of our students, they are curious about the world and often wonder aloud or with their actions. NSTA has resources for those of us who teach preschool, and early elementary students.

The NSTA position statement on Early Childhood Science Education is a fabulous resource for grounding our choices in planning lessons.
See the declarations and recommendations:

I write the Early Years blog and I hope you will search it for topics that interest you, AND comment about your experiences and suggestions.

The Early Years column is in every issue of Science and Children.

I appreciate all the tips, Peggy!

I read your article When early childhood educators conference and talk about science education and I found it incredibly insightful! This is something that I plan on looking into in further detail. Hopefully, I will get to attend a conference like this in my career! I loved it!!

With warm regards,
Bre V.

Hi there Carolina! I am becoming more acquainted with NSTA more and more each day I use this wonderful resource. I love the "Explore All Resources" feature the most! When I have to teach a science related lesson, I make sure to research the topic using this feature and I always end up enjoying everything I come across! You should give it a try! Best wishes, Bre V.
