Hello, I will be teaching a nine week elective genetics course, intended for accelerated high school juniors and seniors. Class periods in my building last 88 minutes, as we operate a block schedule. I am looking for recommendations for activities. I do have access to a thermal cycler and intend to do some PCR lab work. I also have materials for fruit flies. I have done some genetics work in past classes with Wisconsin Fast Plants. I would love to make CRISPR a topic we can delve in to. I would appreciate any input as to whether the activities I've mentioned would be good to further pursue, and/or whether there are other newer relevant and engaging possibilities I am not aware of. Thank you!
Would like to know what did you end up doing:) thanks.. Ash
Something I have always found very interesting is studying acquired vs. inherited traits. When it comes to personality, athletic ability, musical ability, etc., how much is acquired and how much is inherited? This may be a great area to study with your class. If you make it a project for them to complete, you could allow them to choose a trait that they would like to research. This provides differentiation and a way to engage students in traits that interest them. They could go into great depth by examining what inherited traits would be a benefit or a hindrance to an athlete (or whatever type of ability they are studying).
Hi! I really like this idea. Students will be engaged especially if they get to pick which trait they want to research.
