I am less than a year away from having my own classroom. I am excited to introduce science to my students. Does anyone have any ideas for the first day of school science experiments? I want to start the school year off with an interesting introduction to science!

I would use a Phenomenon-Based Learning approach (PBL). Put the students in groups (3 or 4 per group) and let them explore some 'gadget' or 'gizmo,' get curious about what's going on, and try to figure out the science involved. There are lots of ideas for this in the PBL book from NSTA press. That book can also be found on the list of award winners.

I am going to be a new teacher too in less than a year! While I am nervous I'm also very excited to finally have my own class and be able to work every day with my students. Science can be a tricky subject to get kids interested in I've noticed from doing some field experience hours inside of schools, but I've found this website to be a great resource for inquiry based activities that really get the kids excited about science http://www.exploratorium.edu/science_explorer/. My science professor showed it our class and I've used it a few times to conduct some lessons with the students. Theres a bunch of cool ideas that can be used and that are easy enough for young students to just be amazed by, or for older students to be able to conduct on their own.
