What are some ways to keep students interested and engaged (especially the lower grade level students) during lessons?

I have learned throughout school my students love it when the lessons connect to their interests! I also found out that when the lessons are interactive with the students and each student can have a role in the teaching and learning they all try to stay on task and interested so they could have a role.

My students really enjoy when the activity is hands-on and physically engaging!

Some ideas:

If your going over fossils, you could either buy or make dinsosuar dig kits, or if possible, scatter fossils throughout the schoolyeard for students to dig up.

For energy, you can have students jump to represent kinetic energy, and pause to show potential.

For plants, you can grow your own plant as a class, or each individual. Have the students help to take care of it and use mini-lessons to help students learn how the plant grows.

I think a great way to engage students is to make connections to the real world. I think its helpful to show examples of how the topics you are learning abuot present in the real world. I think for students at a young age showing videos for just a short period can be fun.

Some examples:

When studying animals, pull up zoo cameras (these can be found on youtube)

When studying weather, show clips of storms or any weather that is unfamilar to them

You can also include videos of sea creatures, plants, space, etc.

During or after showing these clips ask the students questions about what they saw. (ex. What did you see/what did you notice?) You can discuss patterns, sounds, colors, etc.

It takes careful preparation and knowledge of lower grade students developmental needs to keep them interested and involved in class. Hands on lessons, movement, storytelling, providing options, learning centers, and connecting to their interests are a few ways you can keep them engaged while teaching.

hello everyone, one way I like to keep student engagement is using maniplutaives and multiple items for the lesson, like video, presentation, anchor chart, etc.

I notice the more visual lessons are and the more oppurtunities to speak to their peers and to participate in class. The more oppurtunties they have to get up and move around also helps them focus.
