Coping in teaching

I want to ask what are ways that you as teachers cope with getting overwhelmed. As teachers are pulled in so many different directions and have so many responsibilities day to day. As a student who is planning on going into the profession, I know that burnout is a real thing and want to try and prevent it in my future.

Hi Elle,

I wanted to give some insight on the topic because I am in the same position you are. Currently a senior at Wright State University for education and this topic is something I think about often. Some tools that I think about when thinking of burnout are successful teachers know when to say 'no' and protect their personal time. This might mean setting specific hours for when you'll work at school and when you'll leave work behind. It's easy to take home grading and lesson planning, but learning to separate work and personal life is essential for maintaining mental and emotional health. Prioritizing tasks based on deadlines and importance can help reduce stress. Breaking down big projects (like lesson planning or grading) into smaller chunks helps to make them more manageable. I couldnt live without my planner as well, so making sure I am staying on top of due dates and the work that I can get done in the time frame is crucial. I hope I was able to provide some insight on this topic. Good luck!

Hi Elle!

I'm a senior going through my yearlong placement, and I understand your feelings. It's okay to be overwhelmed. Whenever I feel overwhelmed, I take time during lunch to sit and breathe. This can help recenter you and help refocus. Always remember you can do hard things!
