Hello,
I am a pre-service teacher who enjoys teaching science, and wants more ideas on teaching science, and incorporating science activities, particularly for teaching about fossils. Do any of you have any fun hands-on activities for teaching the processes of fossilization to 3rd-5th graders, or activities that involve making fossils, or digging for fossils?

I found a few articles in the Learning Center that may be of help! The first is a set of trade books, including one that could be used for your older students. Check it out here:

The second article I found gives some information about fossils, and then includes a set of places that you can go for further information. I hope this can get some ideas started for you:

Katherine, heres a quick and easy fossil recipe! The students can go outside and find objects like twigs or leaves to fossilize. And if you just wanted to do a quick version, I'm sure playdoh would work just as well.

I have my students make fossils from things like leaves, twigs, shells etc. I have used kid safe plaster of Paris but it’s a mess to work with so other alternative are clay, or play dough ( homemade is better.) The kids love making their molds.

This is such an interesting topic to focus on! I really enjoy history and dinosaurs so I love that you want to teach about this! I did some digging and I came across this amazing teacher blog: https://smartchickteacher.wordpress.com/2012/10/18/four-types-of-fossils/
The kids will be able to use a modeling clay to create different types of fossils. I thought it was super cool! I hope it helps!
