The Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) is creating and distributing free (federally-funded) student drone kits on behalf of the Federal Aviation Administration’s “Know Before You Fly” initiative. We have received funding to create and distribute 2,500 kits nationwide that are focused on meeting high school-level standards while providing a hands-on technical learning experience with an additional emphasis on career pathways. Each kit contains the components to build a small drone, printed instructions on how to assemble it, and some other accessories including a transmitter, charging cable, batteries, and a first-person view headset. There will also be information on how to access a suite of additional educational resources for the kit online, including an instructional build video, NGSS-aligned unit of study, activities and information about aviation-related career pathways. Educators will have the opportunity to attend a free webinar about using the kit with students- a recommended maximum ratio of 4 students per kit.

Distribution prioritizes high schools where at least one of the following apply:

• The school has a population that is a majority (greater than 50%) minority students;

• The majority of students (greater than 50%) are enrolled in the Free and Reduced Price Lunch (FRPL) Program

• The school is located in a location that is classified as rural by the National Center for Education Statistics

Kit request deadline: Wednesday, May 31, 2023. Due to limited quantities and distribution requirements, not all requests will be fulfilled.
