I'm attempting to plan an unit that integrates earthquakes and volcanoes into our unit over plate tectonics. However, I'm having issues coming up with activities that my students can do besides a research paper. Currently, we teach plate tectonics and earthquakes as separate units and do not even cover volcanoes. Part of the problem is limited use of a computer lab. I would love to turn this into a project based learning unit. Any suggestions?
I don't know your grade level, or if you could still use anything, but I have done this activity with my 9th graders. http://jclahr.com/science/earth_science/cr06/workshop/activities/snack/snack_tectonics.html
Hello Shalen, Here are some resources you may find helpful in teaching hands on activities to teach Earthquakes and Volcanoes. These come from a YouTube channel I have been developing that is home to hundreds of free science demonstrations. They are all common core aligned and can easily be incorporated into any lesson plan or classroom. Use cake frosting and graham crackers to teach the plate boundaries and the types of formations that occur at the boundaries! If you slightly dampen one of the graham crackers, it'll help demonstrate convergent pretty well!! I always thought that'd be fun.
A great idea would be to create a web quest for the students to that way their search is guided. Web quests can be fun if you have the students create a project or presentation at the end of the web quest!
