Is it fair to test students in lab and lecture? I believe it's a science class, meaning it's one class, so why test twice. Is it not enough with a science lab, answering questions, and maybe write a conclusion at the end? I feel it's overwhelming to lecture about a science topic and test them, and then do a lab about the same topic and give another assessment for that.
Labs, lectures, projects, assignments, etc all stem from the same unit. I don't think it's unreasonable to sprinkle a few lab-based questions into an overall unit test. I think it helps students remember that the labs aren't just fun activities where we talk about science and some interesting things happen. The labs work because of the specific scientific principles we've been discussing in class. Apply the real-life experience to the science.
