Dear Earth & Space Science Education Colleagues,
The Summer 2022 edition of NASA's Astrophoto Challenges--hosted by NASA's Universe of Learning--is a great opportunity for you and your learners to explore what it takes to turn digital space telescope data into amazing astrophotography masterpieces. Register for our April 6th Facilitator's Webinar to find out how to participate in the Challenges, which will run this May through July.
NASA's Astrophoto Challenges are periodic opportunities for learners ages 10 and up to create their own multi-color/multi-wavelength images of famous celestial objects using both ground-based telescopes and data from space-based NASA telescopes. The 2022 Summer Challenges will focus on the Carina Nebula and the binary star Eta Carinae. Participants will be able to take their own images with the MicroObservatory robotic telescope network, or work with curated NASA data from the Chandra, Hubble, and Spitzer space telescopes, and the ground-based NSF/NOIRLab Schmidt Telescope. The challenges include instructions on how to turn those data into beautiful composite images with a simple image processing tool used by professional astronomers.
NASA's Universe of Learning has created a collection of digital and hands-on learning resources designed to bring participants’ curiosity and creativity to the scientific process of image processing. Register for our Facilitator's Webinar to find out how you can support learners' participation in the Challenges from your classroom or through after school programming. The Challenges will run from May 2 through July 31, 2022.
