Hi Esther,
I am a graduate student, studying Education. In my program, we are required to fulfill field hours. Field hours provide students the opportunity, to go into a classroom environment, and observe the class. Through my observation, I have identified behavior decreases, when there is fun, and engagement. In the Montessori environment, children are self-directed in their work cycle. The students select work independently, or with a friend. I have witnessed a student become a distraction, and to solve the issue, the teacher simply redirected the student. The teacher redirected the student by providing the student with guidance on selecting a work. To answer your question, "What are some ways I, as a teacher, can manage classroom behavior where students are able to have a comfortable environment but not be a distraction to themselves as well as others?" I believe providing a joyous environment. A environment that inspires the students to be enthused about learning. Engaging their attention through intrinsic lessons. Allowing the student to make discoveries in the classroom.
