Hello, my name is Isabelle Sash. I am a pre-service teacher in my junior year at Wartburg College in Waverly, IA. I am excited to get more into the teaching field but I am nervous about teaching for an entire year and making sure students are continuously engaged. What are some strategies for keeping students motivated throughout the year?

Hello Isabelle,
I completely understand why you’re feeling so nervous. As a student in the Teaching program, I feel the same way, especially since I haven’t been in the classroom yet. One strategy I can think of is to set the tone from the very first minute. By this, I mean you should show enthusiasm or at least appear to enjoy teaching the class because children can sense it. I believe it makes a big difference if your voice expresses emotions rather than using a monotonous tone.

I hope it helps.

Hi Isabelle! Keeping students engaged throughout the year can be challenging, but with the right instructional strategies, you can create an environment where students are constantly motivated and actively involved and participatinf in their learning. I would suggest to center your lesson around phenomena, real-world events or situations that will spark student curiosity and drive them to ask questions. This can be a great anchor for your lessons and maintain students' interest thoroughout the year. Problem-solving skills are also very important to keep students motivated. They are more likely to engage when they are challenged rather than memorizing facts and information. This keeps the material dynmaic and encourages students to take ownership of their learning. Inquiry-based practices are another way to keep students motivated. When they are able to explore topics and develop their own solutions, it not only deepens their understanding but also creates excitement about learning. Lastly, I would recommend hands-on activities to create models, participate in experiments, and interactive activities turns passive learning into active learning. I hope this helps!
