How do you incorporate science into other subject areas?

Hi Ariana,
Tina has given you some great ideas. I want to add to her suggestions by mentioning how science can be the vehicle to integrate writing and reading literacy. There are two NSTA Press authors who have written several books now on how to incorporate science concepts and reading and writing literacy strategies. They are Emily Morgan and Karen Ansberry. Their Picture Perfect Science Lessons Series of books contain gobs of engaging 5 E inquiry lesson plans. Each lesson incorporates two trade books, usually one fiction and one non-fiction. As students progress through the 5 Es of a lesson, they practice many reading and writing strategies while learning about different science concepts. Here is an example of one of the lessons in the book chapter:
Turtle Hurtles
There is a writing activity incorporated that has students writing letters to an organization asking them to help endangered sea turtles. The information sheet and rubric are included.
Also in this 5 E lesson, students collect data to make a line graph (math connection). Plus two trade books are included to integrate reading strategies in the science inquiry lesson.
I hope these ideas will help get you started in understanding how easy it is to integrate other subjects into science lessons.
Carolyn
