I am a junior at Penn State Harrisburg, in Elementary education PreK-4. I am to come up with a lesson plan on the Solar system as a final assignment for this semester. I want my students to know the sizes of the planets to scale. I want them to know the relative size of other planets and the sun to the size of the Earth. What will be a good, hands-on activity for this?

Hi Hye Ju Lee,  a human scale model is always a great idea. I found this activity online for you: https://www.lpi.usra.edu/education/step2012/participant/Day1Agenda.shtml

Hello! I love your idea of making your lesson a hands on activity for the students. I have always believed that if a student can do something with their hands, they are more likely to remember it. A hands on activity that I did in grade school involved using different sized styrofoam spheres, which were then painted to match each different planet. The planets were then glued onto a piece of cardboard. I am not sure where my teacher had gotten the styrofoam spheres from, but I am sure there are other matierals that could be used. I hope this helps. Good luck with your lesson plan!
