2014 World Cup (June 12-July 13) The biggest sporting event in the world kicks off June 12 in Brazil. Learn how sports such as soccer (or football as the rest of the world calls it) reflect global popular culture in unit 25 of Bridging World History. This unit reveals Brazil’s particular influence on soccer playing styles and includes photos of Brazilian soccer fans and retired Brazilian footballer Pele. Here is a collection on the Physics of Sports - it contains useful resources that may be modified and adapted for summer science sessions. ~patty
And Baseball or softball is always a Big Hit! Some resources from the Learning Center are gathered in this collection. ~patty
Thanks, Ada. Many of these topics are on the turning wheel and it is great to offer these good resources to new readers and posters to this thread. Patty
Thanks, everybody for posting these. They are all awesome resources. Another great book about physics in sports in "Newton's Football." It's got tons of real world examples that could be used in instruction along with connections to how real life physics is simulated in video games like Madden.
Newton at the Bat is another great sport science book. ~patty
I teach elementary forces through sports. The kids have to select a sport they'd like to play and then we write a mini manual all about how forces and motion make the sport easier or harder to play. Eventually, they are informed enough that they are able to deduce, by their evaluations, which sports are hardest to play and why.
Kellie, that sounds like Active Physics, a book by Arthur Eisenkraft of UMass Boston. It contains projects which incorporate physics. E.g., you are a commentator at a basketball game. Include observations that explain the physics. Another one is to invent a game for astronauts to play on the Moon. Or write a manual for the track and field team that explains the principles underlying the various games. Kathy
