Hello, my name is Claire Avery. I am a senior at Henderson State University, and I am an elementary education (K-6) major. Subjective assessments don't have a clear answer, so what are some tips to help me grade open response questions without bias? Although a rubric can outline requirements clearly, I would love to learn more specific ideas (whether they pertain to components of a rubric or are something completely different).
Claire,
Probably the most effective way to help with your bias is to have someone else grade a few of your papers so that you can compare what they score with your score. This cross-referencing should be done anytime you use a new rubric to grade something. It is an essential piece of a professional learning community in your school.
If that is not possible, I think being aware of your biases is important. If you have them in mind while you grade, you can try to avoid them. Of course more can always pop up as you grow as a teacher.
Another thing I have done is grade one question at a time on a set of papers instead of the whole paper at once. This helps some.
Hope that helps,
Chris
