I don't have a spool of thread handy to try this experiment with, and I'm trying to picture it. When the thread is at the bottom and you tug to the right, will the spool roll and wind up the thread? Or will the thread unwind with the spool somehow still rolling to the right?

It depends on the direction you are pulling the string.  In the extreme is the string is horizontal it will roll one want and if the string is vertical it will roll the other way, and somewhere in between, it won't roll but only slide.

Try it, it is very interesting.
