This is a nice resource on STEM Education and careers from our colleagues in the UK STEM Careers brings together a wide range of resources as an online learning tool to help us move towards the aspiration of all professionals working in career guidance and in STEM teaching and learning, which is that high quality careers guidance can be delivered in respect of science, technology, engineering and maths to all young people. There are three modules that are intended to be sequential each increasing in depth and complexity. http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/soc/ier/ngrf/stem/

Thanks, Pam. Also, there is an older discussion thread with the same name with additional resources you may be interested in at STEM Careers.

The NLC (NSTA Learning Center has a couple of collections of resources having to do with teaching STEM, too: Teaching STEM High School Collection and Teaching STEM Middle School Collection Check in a week or so for the Teaching STEM Elementary collection that should be available soon. I just completed the Sally Ride Science Academy and received so much background on STEM careers. I highly suggest this resource for promoting STEM careers in your districts.

I think that one of the barriers I face is convincing students that they CAN achieve in science. One approach is to make sure than students see that scientists with background that connect to their experience. Sometimes it is hard to find adequate resources on under-represented minorities in science Here is one resource I recommend. African –American Vivien T. Thomas . The HBO movie “Something the Lord Made” and PBS documentary, "Partners of The Heart” is based on his work at John Hopkins with Dr. Alfred Blalock and the Blue Babies. Although, he never went to college or medical school, 25 years later after the blue baby surgeries he was publicly recognized for his contributions and was awarded an honorary doctorate from John Hopkins. Below is the link to a great article for classroom use. http://scienceheroes.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=269&Itemid=24 Also Native American astronaut John Bennett Herrington was a drop out who eventually achieved a Masters in astrophysics and just completed a Ph.D. In education. He have a great talk at the Celebration of Teaching & Learning. Maybe not quite what you wanted.

This was contributed by Gray Pinkall on the listserve A great story is the one about Dr. Benjamin Carson. He is a neurosurgeon that grew up in a poor, single patent family. He talks about being in elementary school and not being a good student. He said if you asked his class who the worst student in the class was, they would all have (including himself) said him. His Mom was concerned and so she started to require him and his brother to check out a book at the public library, read it and write a book report on it each week. He said in one year he went from being last in his class to the top of his class. There is a documentary about him from PBS I think called "The New Explorers- The Storm Within". It is about Dr. Carson and the most amazing surgery I have ever heard of. It is called a hemispherectomy. He removes HALF the brain of a boy with a very rare brain disorder that gave him seizures as many as 100 in a day (that is the storm within). If the surgery is done when the child is young enough, much of what the removed half of the brain controls can end up being done by the other half. It is truly amazing. I think there is now a made for TV movie about him. It is a great story on many levels. Gary Pinkall

Also from the listserve "Beyond Jupiter - The Story of Planetary Astronomer Heidi Hammel" by Fred Bortz. It's one of the Women's Adventures in Science Series. It's a short book describing her difficulties growing up with an alcoholic parent, and also her struggle to get into MIT and then not flunk out. It is very inspirational.

The Cradle of Forestry in America Interpretive Association (a non-profit partner that helps produce the Natural Inquirer) has created a set of scientists cards. They are like baseball cards except they feature scientists. The cards highlight information such as important scientists' characteristics, most exciting discovery, when the scientist knew they wanted to become a scientist, types of research questions answered, and technology used in research. The cards are made so that they can be printed out on 8.5x11 paper. With one piece of paper, you can create 4 different scientists cards. We have a great lesson plan to help you use of the cards in your classroom. Click here to view the cards and lesson plan or visit http://www.naturalinquirer.org/scientists-v-92.html! We have also had requests to make these cards into posters, so we have created our first set of posters based on these cards. The posters are designed for you to download and print on 11x17 paper. These posters are a great way to share different types of science and scientists' careers with students. Click here to view the poster files or visit http://www.naturalinquirer.org/Scientists-Card-Posters-v-93.html

These websites look very useful. I wanted to ask if anyone had any lesson plans that worked really well with STEM ideas, specifically forces and motion? Thanks in advance. Alfons
