As a future educator one of my biggest concerns is how we ask parents to participate with their child in school activities. For instance, homework, projects, and other activities. How can we encourage parent involvement?

At times, getting caregivers or parents involved in students' activities may be a struggle. However, some ideas are inviting parents into the classroom during the school day or after school to see what their child is learning. Another idea is sending home hands-on activities that families can participate in.

Hi Yurissa, this is a good question because parent involvement is very important for students success. I believe that the best way we can encourage parent involvement as future educators is by keeping them informed of what is happening in the classroom. Establishing open communication with parents, using emails, letters, or class apps, can help parents feel more involved in their child's education.

Hello, as I come close to graduating with my teaching licensure I wonder about this often as well. However, if you use any parent-teacher communication app this can help a lot. You could always send reminders to parents about upcoming projects or events that might need parental support. You could also hold an event within your school and invite parents to come in and support their students during educational games or events.

Hi, I am a preservice teacher at Wartburg College. One way to encourage parent involvement is by maintaining clear and open communication. Use tools like weekly emails, a classroom app, or newsletters to keep parents updated on what their child is learning and how they can help. For projects or homework, provide clear instructions and offer suggestions for ways parents can support without taking over the work. Hosting events like “family science nights” or “parent-student workshops” can also create opportunities for parents to engage in their child’s education in a fun and low-pressure way. Most importantly, emphasize the value of their involvement and celebrate their contributions to their child’s success.

Hello,
To encourage parent involvement in school activities like homework and projects, educators can establish open communication channels, clearly explain expectations for parental support, provide accessible resources, tailor engagement methods to diverse families, host family events, and actively involve parents in the learning process by offering opportunities to contribute their expertise and participate in classroom activities, all while building strong relationships with parents to foster a collaborative learning environment.

I fully agree! There are so many opportunities for parent involvement, I just feel like many parents don't know that these options exist. Teachers might feel discouraged due to lack of participation of awareness from parents. Clear communication is a must, I have seen so many parents get frustrated due to lack of communication from teachers and vice versa!

Parents are a great addition to your classroom. When parents are engaged, students tend to achieve higher grades, attend school more regularly, and have better social skills.Active parental involvement often leads to fewer behavioral problems and a more positive attitude towards school. It creates a strong support system for children, helping them feel more secure and motivated. It fosters better communication between parents and teachers, ensuring that any issues are addressed promptly. It helps build a sense of community and partnership between the school and families, which can lead to a more supportive and enriching educational environment. In essence, when parents and schools work together, children benefit immensely.
