Building Confidence Through Participation

I remember when I was an elementary student I loved when it was time for science. However, even though I liked the subject and liked my teacher, I sometimes would doubt myself as a student. It would keep me from participating when the teacher would ask questions I knew or when I was in a group with students I felt that my ideas were not good like the others, so, I wouldn't mention what I had in mind. What are some things we can do to build students confidence in science through participation?

Hey Luisa! I believe just continuing to praise students for correct answer AND attempting with incorrect answers. Remember, FAIL stands for First Attempt In Learning! I have a poster with that in my classroom and I make sure I always build up my students even if they do not answer correctly. It could be HUGE for that one kid to speak up when they never have before, even if they are wrong.
