Plant Life explanation

My son is in 6th grade and decided to join the Garden Club at his middle school this year. He came home one day and asked me if plants were alive like animals. This made me want to build a lesson plan for explaining the biology of plant life vs animal life that a 6th grade could understand. What type of lesson plan should be used at this level?

First, I would look at the state standards for that grade and make sure I aligned the lesson with those standards. Then, I would research that very topic and see what is out there. You could observe some animal or insect life cycles in the classroom, meal worms, butterflies, tadpoles, ets. Create a Venn Diagram to see how those life cycles overlap with plants. Make sure to get fast growing plants like beans. Here are a few sites I found: https://www.learner.org/courses/essential/life/session4/closer1.html http://abcnews.go.com/ThisWeek/story?id=132601 http://www.bioexplorer.net/difference-between-plant-and-animal-cells.html/ After the research, I would have students create a way to convey what they learned to other students and present that information. At the very least, they might come up with more probing questions that spark more intrigue.
