Every year I try to encourage my school and community to come up with creative ideas for the international "Turn off the lights" event. Its a opportunity to raise awareness of our impact on climate change. Earth Hour 2015 is March 28th. Lights out at 8:30 pm local time. Anyone else involved?

...and that might actually be a great night/hour to do a little stargazing. I am near Chicago, so most evenings have so much light pollution!

I was had the opportunity of dining on the Las Vegas Strip during Earth Hour, so I showed my kids before and during pictures. They could see that even huge hotels that are famous for their lights are participating, so it inspired them to get involved in their own home, too.

This is a great thing you are doing. It will encourage all students to learn and interact with the school community.

Hi Robin,
International "turn off the lights day" is a great attention grabber for students. A way to get students involved in this is to possibly ask them to bring in a picture of the area they are in when the lights are turned off and a picture of when the lights are on. These pictures can be used in class to present to idea of conserving energy. While looking at these pictures you can also present the statistics for how much energy is saved on "turn the lights out day". This will get students thinking about their impact on the world.
