How can you make science fun and engaging for students when there are limited resources?

Sally,

One way to make science fun on a budget is to use the outdoors to your advantage when you can. Especially now during the Fall, there are many activities that you can do with students with materials given to you by nature. You can have students collect leaves and discuss why leaves fall off the trees during Fall. You could also take students on a nature walk and have them look for signs of animals and discuss animal habits, characteristics, etc. Another way is to bring in people from your community who could talk to the students about the content they are learning about. If you live in a more agriculturally based area, have a farmer talk to the students about the science of farming and agriculture.

Hopefully this information is helpful!

Hello Katie,

I agree that using the outdoors is a great inexpensive way to make science more fun for students. My Science Methods course recently got certified in teaching the Project WILD at local schools. This was done for free in collaboration with the Division of Wildlife in my state. If anyone is interested they have many resources to apply to outdoor activities that engage students in a love of the outdoors and an understanding of science concepts!
