Cheating on Online Tests

Hello, I am Corben Pilch, a preservice teacher studying at Wartburg College. I was in high school when Covid shut everything down. One thing that the teachers struggled with when we had online classes was preventing students from cheating on tests. We haven’t gone over any methods or tools to use to prevent cheating on online tests in any of my classes. Does anyone have any tips or resources I could use to help me with this issue?

Hi Corben, great to hear from a fellow educator-in-training! Has your school considered using Mastery Connect on Canvas? It has a lockdown browser feature to prevent students from navigating away during tests. Similarly, the Securly app is a useful tool for monitoring students' screens during assessments.

If you're using Google Forms for quizzes, you can toggle on the locked mode option to limit navigation on Chromebooks.

Additionally, teaching digital citizenship is key. A fun and effective method is introducing the 3 lights system:

Red Light: GenAI is not allowed (e.g., during quizzes).
Yellow Light: GenAI use is restricted to specific tasks.
Green Light: GenAI is encouraged for exploration and creativity.

Thank you, I will definitely be looking into these. The three lights system was a really creative touch, I might use that in my classroom.

One of the things that I remember having during COVID was recorded screens during testing. There was no way to cheat if you and your screen were being recorded. Like having a proctored exam, but reviewed after the test was taken.

I am able to use the Classroom on my iPad to lock students into a screen. The only draw back is that it only works with school issued iPads.
