Module 5 NSTA Learning Center Engagement
Last week you investigated the concepts of the 5E model and design thinking. In reflecting, think of ways that this learning can be linked with what a student may see or experience in a classroom that has implemented these concepts. Take a picture or video that captures this ideal teaching and learning setting.
Design thinking is the method of creativity and problem-solving that is human centered. The 5 step process to design thinking is empathize, define, ideate, prototype and test.According to (Forward Edge, 2017) empathize is figuring out what the problem is, define tells us what are we going to be working on, ideate is putting it together with as many possible ideas, prototype is building live models and trying to gain information. Lastly is the test, where everything is put together and tested.
What a student may experience in the classroom can be based on design thinking. Instead of using the terms we are familiar with, we can use some others where students may engage in their learning by asking questions that's related to the terms. According to (Forward Edge, 2017) “empathize may be looked at as discovery. In the discovery stage students in the classroom may say “I have a challenge, how do I approach it? Define may be looked at as interpretation. In the interpretation stage, students in the classroom may say “I learned something, how do I interpret it? Ideate may be looked at as ideation. Students in the classroom may say “I see an opportunity, what do I create? Prototype may be looked at as experimentation. Students in the classroom may say “ I have an idea, how do I build it? Tests may be looked at as evolution. Students in the classroom may say “I tried something, now how do I evolve it?. These are some ways that design thinking can be linked with a students learning in the classroom
