The Effects of Ineffective Questioning

Hello, my name is Kathryn Christy, and I am a pre-service educator in my fourth year of my undergraduate education.

I believe the art of “questioning” is an incredible opportunity to engage students in deeper learning within all content areas, especially in STEAM education (science, technology, engineering, agriculture, mathematics). Every answer or idea often comes from an initial question and a human seeking additional knowledge.

However, I acknowledge there are moments in education where ineffective questions are being asked of students, and I am curious to know more about the effects on students.  Do you think students being asked ineffective questions is doing more harm for students’ learning, compared to being asked no questions at all?

Thank you for your time and responses.

Kathryn, I appreciate your question as it really made me think. I don't have an answer for you. If the question leads to confusion or misunderstanding then I would think it could do more harm than good. Sounds like an interesting research topic to me!
