Depending on the class I am teaching I make scale models. We make a scale model of the solar system outside to compare the sizes and distances of the planets. We also make a scale model of the galaxy, we can' accuratley show the sizes of stars, to see the distances involved, and we make a nodel of our ocal group of galaxies.

I have had student drop different objects from various height to measure crater size. They can work on determining what factors affect the craters. Depending on grade level they can calculate kinetic energy of the impact. A bucket or container with high sides with sand in it is usually what I use. I assume someone has already mentioned this to you, but the moon's phases are not caused by the Earth's shadow on the moon. It is the amount of the lit side of the moon we get to see.
