Tue, Dec 04, 2018 10:08 PM in Science Fun for Students
I found that starting class with videos that seem to "defy science" always caught all my students attention. For instance when we talked about light waves, we watched a video showing a picture behind a cup and after water was added to the cup, the picture would reverse. Students would call out "thats fake", "no way is that real", and other related things. It really g...

Hi Zachary!
I was student teaching this past fall with eighth graders also and had to create lesson plans on Forces and Motion. I noticed my students loved hands on activities and would grasp ideas better when they could manipulate activites. Forces and motion is very easy to create hands on learning. We had students do things such as tug-o-war and arm wrestle the first day to discuss fo...

Exploring the Complexity of Ocean Acidification: An Ecosystem Comparison of Coastal pH Variability
Mon, Dec 10, 2018 5:36 PM
pH levels
This article provides an extremely detailed lesson on how the pH of water can affect its ecosystems living there. It covers multiple Next Generation Science Standards. The article also provides educational scaffolding that explains which topics must be covered before the inquiry. The article provides you with teaching strategies to use for each piece of the inquiry and how to guide students through the process. Students are to gain enough knowledge to be able to interpret a "mystery data sheet". This lets students make inferences based on prior knowledge and create claims. From this students can see the importance of having certain pH levels in certain ecosystems. Overall, I think this is an amazing lesson but in order to completed, students must have substantial background knowledge.
How Do Our Actions Affect Water Quantity and Quality?

How our actions affect water quality
This article focuses on using inquiry to help students see the affect they have on the water sources around them. It provided a step by step process to teach students and provides advice for different learners or classrooms. While it first suggests to have students design their own experiments to test how ground cover affects surface runoff and it then suggests to give students the model they would be using. I think this could be changed to have students test it using their own designs if you have the time. Overall this article is extremely informative and provides examples to describe each piece of the inquiry. Students are also able to visible see the the difference between the amount of runoff and the amount of recharge. The text also offers valuable extension pieces to use after the first inquiry is competed. I believe this is a great experiment to complete with all grades to allow for students to see the importance of their actions and the affect they have on the environment.
