There so many things students learn in this lesson other than the science about the stars, Earth, moon, and sun. It incorporates history by discussing how people used the objects in the sky to navigate and how different cultures made up stories to go with the constellations in the sky. It also ties in writing by having the students come up with their own stories after they create their own constellation. One TEK I found that correlates to this article is 1.8B, which discusses students observe and record changes of objects in the sky. I learned that astronomy visualizations outside of planetariums are usually difficult and misleading. This article stated, “two of the most common types of learning that happen in informal settings are effective learning and skill development”, and I believe this 5E lesson backed up that statement.

I chose this article because it is a very well thought out and organized lesson plan. It provides you with the different way’s students will describe objects to you and examples of them. As you go along in the 5E lesson activities you can see how the student’s description can change, which can be seen as students discuss an object in the beginning and again at the end. Having students record their observations throughout the lesson is a critical step so that you can see how their understanding has grown. TEKS I found for this article are 1.5A and 1.5C, which discuss classifying objects by observable properties and by the material they are made from. I agreed with how they went back to the first activity they did to see how their perception of properties of matter has changed. I also agree with them introducing a material that wasn’t like the other. This made students dig deeper into their understanding of properties.

Article Review

I chose this article because it’s a great hands on activity for students to learn about plants and how they grow. It allows you to alter the activities based on the needs of each individual student. It also talked about the importance to identify the misconceptions and address them to where the student is the one who figures it out from their hands-on experience. This article showed me different ways to extend a student’s understanding based off their prior knowledge. It also provided ways to extend this to other lessons such as how plants change their environment and how the environment can affect plants. TEKS that I found to go with this activity were K.9.B and K.10.A. I agree that the best way for students to learn are through hands on activities, where students are the ones that are coming up with their own observations and ideas on a topic. Being able to create your own understanding enhances the knowledge you’re obtaining.
