AWESOME COLLECTION FOR BEGINNING TEACHERS
Salish’s shared collection contains numerous articles that will assist teachers just entering their field. The articles list strategies for developing inquiry lessons and ways to include all your students from low level to high level, from ESOL to ESE. The article Helping Students with Learning Disabilities provides a large list of ways to accommodate students with learning disabilities. The list incorporates accommodations for homework assignments, assessing and how to make the most of class time.
Articles that help make a classroom more active, hands-on and experimental are called inquiry based classrooms. This collection contains several articles that explain what teachers are to do to promote more inquiry in their science classrooms. Pathways to inquiry helps determine the balance between structure and freedom and how much responsibility should be given to the learner. The article Inquirize Your Teaching discusses subtle shifts that a teacher makes to obtain a successful inquiry classroom.
Instructional Diversity, although an old article, brings to light techniques that teachers can use today to reach students of all learning styles. It specifies the different teaching modalities and how to use them. It’s short, sweet and to the point.
This collection also has the article Safety first which is essential for helping teachers lay ground rules in his/her classroom about safety. It shows the teacher how to implement rules and even gives a sample safety contract that can be customized to fit classrooms from elementary to high school.
My favorite reading in this collection is Quizzing Students on the Myth of Science. I personally enjoyed this article because it corrected some of my misconceptions. This would be a great quiz to give students at the beginning of the school year to find out what it is that they know and don’t know about science in general. A science teacher can make great use of this article by using it throughout the year to debunk myths students’ will have.
In conclusion, this collection is jam packed with useful and important information for new and old teachers alike. It has a variety of information that can be useful throughout the year that will benefit the teacher as well as her/his students.
