My NSTA / Peers / Brittany Bentz

I am currently in my senior year at Wright State University. I am doing my student teaching in first grade at an elementary school in Kettering and I absolutely love it. I love teaching science because I love that it gives students a chance to discover things about the world around them. I am excited to learn new ways to teach science to help my students to develop strong inquiry skills and a love for learning the subject.

I have noticed that teaching science to middle school students is not that different from teaching it to elementary school students. Inquiry-based learning is beneficial to students in both of these groups, so the process on how to teach science is very similar. Hi Harper! Always start your lesson by picking a standard. I would then conduct a pre-assessment to see where the students are at before planning a lesson. Students also learn best through inquiry-based learning. Present them with a phenomenon and then let them ivestigate. This increases student motivation and makes learning more meaningful to them.

This article discusses many of the great benefits of co-teaching in a middle school science classroom. Co-teaching allows for teachers to plan lessons that allow students to be more actively involved in the learning process. Co-teaching at the middle school level also allows for students who have disabilities, learning challenges, and who are gifted to have their needs met. This article also outlines the benefits teachers have when participating in co-teaching, such as help with grading and for test prep for high-stakes testing.
