Connecting Children to Their World

To connect students to the world around them I would use big understanding, guiding statements that describes essential content that I want my students to learn throughout the unit. I would do this by planning and creating lessons that will help develop inquiry and literacy skills. I would do this for outcome HC4.1. I would do this in three steps. First step: Integrate the students’ conceptual learning in school with world outside of school. Second step: students will provide a written statement describing what they noticed, what they would change to help the community and/or environment, how they want to help the community and/or environment, and what steps would they take. Third step: focus the content addressed in a unit or lesson.
I will make sure the unit being studied is encompassed about appropriate concepts, developed through activities, big understanding, etc. I will base the big understanding on:
o Validity
o Significance
o Durability
o Balance
o Appropriateness
o Relevancy
