Cells and Chemical Reactions: Basics of Metabolism
Sat, Feb 09, 2013 7:19 PM
Interactive and Informative
This Sci Object does a great job of setting the groundwork for metabolism and the chemical reactions related to it through a clear definition of what energy is and why we use it. The object has interactive portions that show how exactly a reaction takes place and also includes knowledge checks so that you can be sure that you understood the information presented. This was a great way for me to explore a topic that I am interested in and to build off of a knowledge base that began 13 years ago in high school anatomy and physiology.
Podcast: Teach Science Concepts and Inquiry with Food: What is a Food Allergy
Wed, Feb 06, 2013 2:00 PM
Great Q&A Session
This podcast has great visuals as the introduction is made. The visual guide makes it easier to follow the explanation of what happens when an allergy forms, or what causes the reaction.
There were some great questions in the Q&A session, I was especially interested in the late onset of allergies. While some people don't present a reaction for many years, their allergy may one day manifest itself in a variety of different ways (quite possibly not in an expected way). As my family has a high presence of celiac disease (gluten allergies essentially) I was happy that time was spent talking about the disease and its allergic manifestations.
Big Macs and Healthy Teens? Exploring Fast Food as Part of a Healthy Adolescent Lifestyle

Get students thinking about nutrition
This article includes a well thought out lesson planning map that would be easy to replicate in your own classroom. With the rates of obesity among today's youth being so high, I think that this series of activities is an engaging way to have students evaluate not only healthy lifestyles but the role that fast food can play in leading a healthy life. The included assignments do not say whether or not fast food should be a part of a young person's diet, but provides the young people with the tools needed to determine the nutritional value of these foods/meals. I would recommend this article as a resource for a middle school science teacher (as the plan was designed for grade 8 students).
