What I have started doing for the kids who are not turning in assignments is giving them a grade of 50 rather than a zero. Basically, the lowest grade I will give is a 50. A 50 is still failing no matter how you look at it according to the grading scale that our school system uses (A=100-90, B=89-80, C=79-75, D= 74-70, F=69 and lower). Another thing that is really good about using both a pre-test and a post-test with each topic that you are covering is the DATA!! With all of the new guidelines that teachers are having to follow and the level of accountablity that teachers are being held to, the range of improvement from the pre-test to the post-test for each student is documentation of how you are doing teaching the material. ...

Fri, Jan 20, 2012 1:26 PM in When you leave your students in the hands of a substitute teacher, what advice do you have? What are your "pet peeves?" What do you appreciate the most as a professional?
We are not really having a ton of issues with automated sub placement at our school right now. Our county has gone through a ton of budget cuts and we actually do not have any new subs coming into the system. Many of the subs that we are currently using are retired teachers which is working out well because they already have great classroom management (for the most part).
