I believe that a great classroom environment can be developed through positive reinforcement of students actions, even if they aren't the correct actions. For example, praising one group for being organized or following directions versus calling out another group that may be off task. The unfortunate reality is that not all student have the supportive family that they may need to further their education outside of school. It may be helpful to offer after school tutorials or refer the student to a "study hall" in order for them to receive additional individualized support.

I've experienced a similar situation and it was very upsetting to me to find that my students didn't feel that I enjoyed being their teacher. I understand that your personality is somewhat quiet and reserved but just thanking the students for behaving well or greeting them as they enter the class can go a long way!
