I am interested in ways online learning communities grow. My background is in science education and working with online learning environments and resources in the virtual world. I teach earth, space and physical science courses online.

If you are looking for inspiration about teaching NGSS please consider the day long archived virtual conference of NGSS Practices in Action. You’ll be inspired by the session on modeling by Cynthia Passmore who engages to consider that science is about figuring things out. Jonathan Osborne session on argumentation helps you to understand its place in science and the need for science literate students to engage in developing explanation through evidence. Mariel Milano focused on engineering practices, explaining how they are similar to yet different from science practices and how students can engage in them to lean core ideas in life, Earth, and physical science.

If you have 150 third graders and want to engage them in a research project on Pluto's lost planetary status who do you contact? If you are the late Lindsay Jones the amazing librarian at Round Rock Independent School District at Cactus Ranch
Elementary School you contact Journey Through theSolar System provided by Space Center Houston. This article is worth the read to see how this librarian and teachers used video conferencing with Space Center representatives based on student generated questions to investigate what is a planet. In the course of this project students developed research skills , evaluate information , wrote a paper and create a final video about their findings. This project is a tribute to learning and to Lindsay Jones.
