I love this idea! Another thing you could possible add is have students create a family tree with their parents so they can observe different pictures of past family members that may not have even had a chance to meet.

Any type of science activity that doesn't involve the teacher teaching a lesson is really engaging for students. Giving them an activity to participate in that isn't explicitly stated that they have to learn one specific concept form it lends itself to more understanding from children.
