Reflections really do give me an insight on what is working with the students and what isn't working. My state is also putting a bigger emphasis on formative assessments and reflections can be used as one. I even do a quick count of raised hands to test the students' water for understanding. I sometimes give short quizzes as well to make sure no one is being left behind or if I have a part time...

Having debates in class is always happening, unfortunately most of the time they are not productive and without support. I also agree that choosing a point and defending it with evidence is a very important life skill. When I have time I have students do this with their math homework. They present the problem show how they came to their solution and if another math group disagrees then defend i...

I have heard from some friends that they might also be getting iPads for their classrooms as well but I have reservations for my class unless there is proper training. Like at my school the principal is great with finding funds to get mac-books for every class but I think there should be a training program for the students to use pages or spreadsheets properly. I find that i need to use entire cl...

Reproduction and Heredity
Fri, Nov 30, 2012 1:12 PM Another Great Pack of Resources.
I found this Sci-Guide to be ver insightful and helpful to my class and I when learning about Heredity. While I knew I had a basic understanding of how traits were passed down genetically his Sci-guide provided many great lessons and ideas which benefited my teaching. In Addition, the Sci-Guide gave many useful resources like links to other websites and resources which provided even more support for my students. The baby building lesson went right with what I wanted to teach my students about why we have the eye and hair color we do in addition to other traits we are born with. I also found the student samples to very helpful with assessments for myself and the students. I know that I will use this resource again in the future if it is available to add just a little more to my lessons.
Life Cycles and Inherited Traits

When I was looking for a Sci-guide I was looking for something that would relate more to the topic I was covering which was termites. This Sci-gude focuses on butterflies but there was an section on insect and there life cycles. The resources on this Sci-guide were more information for the students which was enough for them to complete their project and assignments. Again this is a great website and I hope it is continued to be offered to the teachers in Hawaiia s wella s the rest of the country.

This was a pretty good resource to help support my lesson with my fifth graders. While I wasn't able to use all of the material the information I got from this Sci-guide was very helpful to me. As I stated I didn't use the guide directly but it did guide me in the information that I taught them. The student enjoyed the websites linked in the Sci-guide especially the energy ant. This entire site and the Sci-packs and guides are a great help to me and I'm sure to many teachers.
