On top of a safety contract at the beginning of the year, I think it is crucial for us as teachers to remind our students that these simple safety precautions must be taken outside of the classroom as well. Fo instance, when to wear gloves/protective eyewear in certain situations or even the common sense thoughts of not putting unknown substances in their mouth. We cannot just assume that their pa...

Real Science in the Palm of Your Hand

Great resource for new teachers!
I appreciated that this article was broken down into several concepts in order to address such a complex idea such as teaching science effectively and meaningful to students across all grades. Having the students participate in science activities that require responsible roles initiates a child's interest and self identity through those meaningful science experiments. Even though this is science content, a science classroom can help a child learn characteristics about themselves as well as strengths or possible career interest. Incorporating citizen science builds on other important core values as well such as self esteem, team building, and even community involvement. It shows students that they can "do" science and are able to make even the smallest difference in our society which should be the goal of any science classroom!
Would I Survive in this Type of Habitat? Collection

Amazing variety!
I loved the fact that each resource you found provided a different aspect to your research. For instance, you had resources that provided specific grade level activities that related to habitats as well as stories that would be age appropriate in order to read to students. With these resources, you will be able configure an effective lesson due to the fact that every feature has been thought out through your selections. Each selection is also easy to read and short enough where you can quickly assess if the resource is worth using. If a teacher was teaching on habitats, I would absolutely refer them to your collection as additional support on lessons and backgrounds knowledge.
