Review of Safety Collection Collection
The Safety Collection Collection by Sarah Neeser provides the history of how safety in the science classroom has progressed over the years due to shifts toward inquiry instruction. This collection contains four articles dating between 2002 and 2011. While slightly dated, the articles provide a wealth of information ranging from the National School Science Safety Indexing Project to safety resources and how to keep students safe before and during a field trip. This collection is a must-read for all teachers, new and experienced.
Overall, I really enjoyed this collection because it made me aware of aspects of science safety that I knew nothing about. For example, I did not know that there was a study done that surveyed classroom safety or that as the use of inquiry in the classroom increased so did classroom incidents. Reading the data from this study was also really interesting. For example, when the National School Science Safety Indexing Project took place, 46% of the teachers surveyed had not received science safety training. Also in this collection, are two great articles with one containing a long list of science safety resources from NSTA’s Safety in the Science Classroom web portal and another article about how science teachers can ensure safety prior to and during a field trip. I am glad that I will be adding these two articles to my science teacher toolbox and will be able to use them in the future.
The only topic that I think this collection is missing is how to teach students about the necessity for safety in the classroom. The addition of this topic to the collection would make this collection a one-stop-shop for all things regarding science safety. For this reason, I am giving this collection a rating of 4 stars out of 5.
