Connecting Electricity and Magnetism

Electricity and Magnetism
This article is packed full of knowledge. It covers many big ideas but does not spend a lot of time with the details. It is a great outline to use and to receive ideas from. Like others have said some of the materials that are used for certain experiments are not easily assessable. Some materials are easy to substitute but others cannot be substituted, which makes a few experiments hard. The format that it is written is very easy to follow. I think this is ideal for students. It is great how it is broke down. This could be a unit that is spread out throughout a week, a lesson and project for each day. Depending on the materials and length of time each teacher has for this lesson, it has a variety of opportunities.
Hamburger Science

Food Science
I thought this was a great article. It applies to real life and would be beneficially to any age group. The lesson could be adapted for the younger students by observation as the teacher performs the steps. The way that this is set up gives many different opportunities to add different meats and even a veggie burger. This lesson could even be taught over a few days, using different meats every day. They could keep a journal over what they observed and even compare what changed depending on each meat. This lesson has endless opportunities depending on how long the teacher would like to spend on this subject.
Journey to the Reef

Great Lesson!
This is a great chapter for 5th graders. It gave a week long unit directly over the coral reef. I really liked how they started the week with what the student knew, what the students wanted to know and what they learned. I think that is a great idea especially for the teacher. This lets teachers know exactly where the students are on the knowledge of coral reefs. Another great point was the way that every subject was integrated in this unit. There is science, math, reading and social studies. The social studies aspect was very interesting. I personally gained a new view on coral reefs after reading this chapter and how we as teachers should bring in many aspects to what may look like a purely science lesson.
