Great activity idea! Being in Hawaii and surrounded by mountains and ocean, there are many "real-life" examples for our keiki (children). There are safety nets all around mountainsides where boulders and rocks fall. There are also many tragic stories of people's lives and properties being destroyed because of erosion. I think these activities would be good for me as well! Living in Hawaii, we do not get to experience the typical seasons. I lived in Oregon for a year but even there there's just a rainy season and a dry season. I think this is important for our students in Hawaii because they need to understand that our weather here is not typical. I want them to experience winter and fall but here we cannot.

I really like doing the activity where you show the size of the planets and their distances from the sun on a scale. It's a good activity to give students perspective and also good to integrate math by doing things to scale. Might be hard, though, because the scale is so small, but a good activity anyway.
