Importance of a Collaborative Community

This is a great article on the importance of having a community that collaborates with one another. This article talks about the professional learning communities (PLCs) and talks about the impact and results that these communities can have on the schools. This article connects to Senge’s vision and Etienne Wenger and colleagues for learning organizations. Professional learning communities help teachers by providing a structure that supports teacher learning and continuous improvement. This positively impacts student outcomes. This article also defines five characteristics of a good PLC. 1. Shared Beliefs, Values, and Vision 2. SHared and Supportive Leadership. 3. Collective Learning and Its Application 4. Supportive Condition. 5. Shared Personal Practice. This article is a great read in order to know how to effectively implement a strong professional learning community.

Effectively Teaching Science-Processing Skills

This article talks about the specific science-processing skills that can help students effectively read and interpret science-based questions. It talks about how students should be receiving science instruction where students talk about, write about, and reflect on science and not just specific test questions. Teachers can then assess the students’ ability to understand the idea by asking them to recognize the concept in a series of questions. This would be a great text to use for struggling students so the teacher can help break it down by understanding and not memorization.
